I just received word that the City of Hastings has decided to NOT allow ice fishing at the Heartwell Park Pond.  Therefore, we will not be stocking any more catchable rainbow trout there this winter.

can you put them in Lake Hastings?

or will they live there?

No. Lake Hastings is quite a bit bigger. We stock those catchable rainbow trout where we can expect most if not all of them to be harvested. Small bodies of water are ideal.

Windmill #1 or some of the Grand Island city lakes would be the closest waters with some catchable trout.

West Point would welcome them I’m sure! Our newly renovated lake would be perfect. In past discussions with fisheries folks it was felt folks in our region could drive to other lakes (Norfolk, Fremont, David City, Sioux City) for trout opportunities…

Perhaps there should be a rotation if that’s the case.

We can only produce so many catchable trout in our hatcheries. So, we try to spread those stockings out where they are a reasonable distance from as many folks as possible. We do not have enough trout to stock in every body of water and we try to stock them in waters where most if not all of them will be caught.
