I got home last Sunday afternoon from our fall Becoming an Outdoors-Woman workshop held at the 4-H camp at Halsey.  We had a great time again this year.  The canoeing class I helped with Friday afternoon was a challenge in the 50mph winds, but we survived.  In fact when we floated the Middle Loup River it went very well; the wind was mostly at our backs and I believe we floated our usual stretch of river in record time!

In the other sessions I taught “Fishing Formula for Success”, co-taught “Fish and Game Care and Cleaning”, and then finished up Sunday morning with our trip to the Halsey Pit to actually do some fishing!  It is always a very busy weekend and by Sunday afternoon I am ready to sit down and catch my breath, but it is very rewarding.  The ladies are there because they want to learn and they are very easy to teach.

I wrote last week about how important it is for us anglers, hunters and trappers to pass on our passion for the outdoors.  Someone taught us and that made a huge difference in our lives.  Another reason the BO-W weekend is so rewarding is we have a great opportunity to make a difference in other people’s lives.  It may be women in this case, but it is no less rewarding to share my passion for the outdoors and for Nebraska with them.  Some of them have had little exposure to the outdoors while others have had some exposure but want to learn some skills so they can be more independent and appreciate their time in the outdoors more.

Every year when we finish the weekend, my last session is spent on the pond, fishing.  During that last session I always have at least one lady who catches her first fish, or one who catches her biggest fish, or one who catches her first fish on her own–picked the bait by herself, tied it on by herself, cast by herself and caught fish!  Those are life changing experiences!

And we have a lot of fun doing it!

Check out our BO-W program and sign up for some of the opportunities that will be offered next year, http://www.ngpc.state.ne.us/wildlife/programs/bow/bow.asp .  I highly recommend it!

Here are some pictures of some of the gals with the fish they caught this year.
